Ah, the return of FALL

Summer is starting to wind down, even though it seems that it has just started! The warm weather came late this year. However, FALL deliveries have come in this season, earlier than ever! This is my favorite season and time of year. And the fashion is back in a big way this season.

Summer hiatus is over. This season, fall is full of GLAMOUR!!!

Key trends:

It's still a throw back to the 70s

Color Blocking: Look for neutrals and blacks, really rich for color blocking

Floppy Felt Hats

Mixing Prints

GLOVES w fringe

Jewel Tones: deep reds, mustards, emerald greens and royal purples

FUR: Vests, Jackets, Peacoats and Collars. You name it, fur is in!

I cannot wait for the full fall deliveries! About half of them are in stores already.

NEW~

Hitting stores with her line is fashion stylist and new designer, Rachel Zoe! Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales are already carrying her fall line. Her collection doesn't disappoint, as long as you can find the pieces that you like and mix them into your existing wardrobe. Price point will keep you from a full wardrobe make over. Her maxi dresses and tuxedo jackets have been in high demand.

Also new for American Department Stores is French line, Gerard Darel. Fans of this line are stylish celebs such as Halle Berry, Gwenyth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Carrie Underwood, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift and Eva Longoria to name a few. Pieces of the Spring/Summer line and new Fall Collection have been popping up in photos of US Weekly and People. Line has been around since 1971, and is based out of Paris. It has been doing so well in Europe it is expanding over into the US. It is sold EXCLUSIVELY at SELECT BLOOMINGDALES only. Handbags and Maxi dresses and Scarves are the hot items to have from this line.

I have a few pieces from this line and I adore it. The softest leather handbag I own, hands down. I also just snagged the last scarf from the fall line (sold out in most stores) It has a bunch of different prints on it and rabbit fur pom poms on the end. I've never seen anything like it~amazing! I can't wait for the weather to change.

SPRING AND SUMMER FASHION FUN

It's finally here- SPRING AND SUMMER DELIVERIES!!!

Spring this season is full of color and prints! Look for a huge through back to the 70's with just about everything. Paisley print maxi dresses, thick espadrille wedges, color blocking, and high waisted everything! Denim is going back to wide leg and is fabulous as a high waist trouser! LOVE.

Summer is looking to be similar, just less material. Shorts are high waisted, trouser-style, and its all about the wedge sandal. There are some great sheer knit tanks to layer with, or use as a bikini cover-up. A lot of the RTW lines have come out with a division of swimwear tunics, such as DVF, JOIE, TRINA TURK, NANETTE LEPORE. GENIUS!

The stores are filled with RESORT 2011~

Resort is the much needed fashion filler between winter and spring. The season won't last for long, but it is the perfect transition out of chunky sweaters and into strapless dresses!

For weather that is as up and down as ours has been recently, resort wear is a great option. It is not only for the Vacation go-ers! If your not ready to give up sweaters yet, look for some lighter weight linen sweater options. Or sheer rayon sweaters, which are great for layering.

Expect stripes for this season, as well as some various shades of neutrals before we see the pop of color for spring.

Winter/holiday

Although you may already be seeing resort wear come into your favorite stores, I want to go through some of the winter/holiday trends being that it is December-and we all have those holiday parties coming up we have to dress for!

Lace is for every season, but for the holiday season it can be really great. It can be edgy, feminine, sexy or girlie all depending on the way you wear it. My favorite is to pair it back to a leather blazer or black bootie to give it an edge.

Velvet

Velvet is SO in this year! Crushed velvet blazers (theory makes an amazing one), Velvet lined dresses for the holidays (Alice and Olivia) or even a velvet skirt to put a holiday twist on an outfit. It is so nostalgic of the 90s, I remember I had these velvet dresses as a little girl I would wear for Christmas. This trend has taken that and sophisticated it circa now. It ads such a great texture to an outfit if done right.

Sequins

The sequin sweatshirt is a great way to dress up casual, but still be comfortable.

From Holiday parties to red carpet glam you can take your sequins to whatever level you desire.

This is the one time a year to go nuts for all that glitters! Find your best color and be bedazzled. Be advised that this look goes a long way, pair back with basics to balance the rest of your outfit.

Sisters Catalogue

I am so excited to have gotten these back. We pit the shoot together in just a few days, and shot over 150 looks for their catalogue in one very long day! I am pretty pleased with the photos, but more importantly, so was the client!!

FINALLY FALL

YAY it is FINALLY FALL!

This is by far my most favorite season. I long for the fall season pretty much the whole year.

I love the weather (a slight season change for Californians, but nonetheless), the atmosphere of lights at night, pumpkin spice scents wafting through the air. Even the nostalgic feeling I can't quite place I invite with open arms year after year. To me, nothing is better than the snuggley feeling of FALL.

Which brings me to the next best thing about Fall: FASHION!

Fall fashion is the best season because it is starting to cool down just enough for fun layers. It's warmer than winter, so you can still go outside feeling great with just a few layers, and not have to be bundled up like an Eskimo. At that point, it's about warmth instead of the fashion.

Here are some of the trend highlights as well as my favs for this FALL SEASON:

1. CAMEL COLORS

This color is such a great rich and luxurious neutral. An update on the classic black peacoat.

2. BLUE/GREY COLORS

I love this color for fall! It's a bit warmer than just basic grey and it is flattering on all skin tones. LOVE LOVE LOVE

3. TEXTURED TIGHTS

These tights are a fun way to change up leggings, but still keep your legs warm. They pair back really well with tall boots.

4. KNITS W FUR
The perfect blend of a cozy knit sweater with the edginess of a fur lining. Harmonious. My favorite trend.

5. Intro to SEQUINS
Sequins are everywhere! They are starting to crop up into the late fall fashion, and are sure to explode into the holiday fashion this season. A little sequins goes a long way. Perfection.

6. CHEETAH and ANIMAL PRINT VESTS

Ah the softness of a fur vest. This is looks great paired back to leggings and a simple T. Totally revamps an outfit with a little flair. Amazing.

I say it all the time and I will say it again. I wish fall was all year long. Amen

Summer Trends

Hello Stylistas! I feel like I have been hibernating all summer, but quite the opposite. I have changed jobs and have been wrapped up in all things new in the industry!

Some top trends from the summer so far:

boyfriend/ex-boyfriend jeans

I personally LOVE this trend. Katie Holmes was one of the first spotted sporting a pair of these and I have been dying to get my hands on the perfect pair.

Rompers

These have been shown in so many different fabrics, styles and cuts. So versatile. I love the dressier version for nighttime style that is comfortable. Great with cute gladiator style sandals or a platform heels for some extra glam.

Hot Nail Polish Colors

All shades of greens, lilacs, yellows and corals. My personal favorite colors are carried by the Essy and Chanel lines.

Even though the summer season is long over in the fashion world, the weather has been to slow to catch up. It is still hot hot hot on the west coast and these trends will still continue well into October even early November. Now is the perfect time to snap up some of these trends in stores on sale!!

I am so excited for all the new Fall trends! It is my favorite time of year and I am loving all the previews of the new fall lines.

Trend Alert: All shades of Purple!

Hey Stylistas! There is a NEW TREND ALERT- All shades of PURPLE!

You may have noticed different shades of purple popping up in stores whether it is in clothing, shoes, or most recently and my personal favorite: MAKE-UP.

I discovered this great trend myself a few months back by accident. Looking to buy a new eye pencil and bored with the usual browns and blacks, the other color I will usually pick up is green. As much as I love all things green, I wanted a more of a change, without being drastic.

For all of us brown eyed beauties, we sometimes fall into a rut when it comes to make-up that works for our eye color. My eyes can look darker or lighter brown, almost hazel with flecks of green depending on the colors I wear. My sister has enviable green eyes and I am always looking for ways to highlight the green tones in my own eyes.

Another color I picked up was blue. However, blue does not contrast as well with brown eyes as I would have liked. It works, but it is nothing new, and nothing great.

Then, I went to a color that I tend to favor in all areas of my life. PURPLE. As a february baby, I have always loved this color in any shade. And what is so great about it is that there are so many great shades of this color that can work for ANYONE.

I have had friends and strangers ask if I am wearing purple eye liner. It's so genius! From far away this color works like a brown-great for everyday and n

ot too bold. But up close it provides more of a pop than your typical black. It's a pleasant and fun surprise! I have been rimming my eyes with purple liner since. One caution on smudging the liner underneath: tread lightly to avoid looking like under eye circles or worse-bruises. Other than that have fun exploring what shade of purple works for you!!

Trend Alert: Keys!

Hey Stylistas! I am going to try out a new segment in the blog. There are so many great things going on in the fashion world. It is always changing by the minute-fashion never sleeps!

One trend worth exploring are KEYS. Trend Alert! Now, to some this trend alert is not exactly brand new. But, they have been popping up everywhere.

I remember about two years ago my roommate went to Italy for the summer. She came back with key on a long thin chain as a necklace. I immediately thought-genius! I had never seen this before. I loved it, and knew that I had to entertain this look for myself as well. Although her key was a but different than the ones that are on trend right now, the idea and the look is still the same.

My parents were taking an Italian vacation about a month after my roommate got back from hers. I asked them to keep their eyes peeled at local vendors in Italy for these keys that I could put on a chain. Well, they had a heck of a time trying to locate these keys I was looking for. Even the Italian family they stayed with questioned my sanity and asked my mom if I was "Perso" (lost). My poor mom, determined to come back to the states with keys finally went to a local hardware store in Italy and bought old fashioned real keys. Which are exactly the same looking keys that are in fashion now-mine are just a little bit heavier on the hardware.

Then, a few months later, I had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain. While I was browsing La Rambla street during a vendors market I saw one silver key all by itself with the other jewelry charms. I snatched it up immediately and have been alternating between my Italian and Spanish keys as necklaces ever since.

Trends are funny that way. Something that seems to just appear and catch on over night usually originated from somewhere. Maybe this key trend didn't originate from Venice, Italy a few years ago. But then again, maybe it did. Just remember, you heard it here first!

Peacock Palette

Happy Tuesday everyone! I wanted to share a photo shoot that I styled over the winter holiday. The theme was centered around Peacocks. We did everything from a white, soft palette to an extreme jewel tone of electric blue and deep green palette. The model was great because she was like a canvas we could completely transform-an artists dream. The photographer Andrea LaBarge Mills was equally amazing and extremely professional. Some of the angels she was able to work from took the shots to a whole new level. Below are some of my favorites from the shoot.

Black/White Widow Shoot-Fall 2009

Hello! As promised, I am staying on top of my blogging! I think that I will start from the bottom of my last post and work my way up. The style project was a concept of a Black and White Widow. The Black Widow was supposed to appear dark and depressed while the other widow-the White Widow was supposed to be happy and fairy-like. When I first heard about the job, I was unaware that the styling would require-wedding dresses.

Now my first thought when I found this out (after I accepted the job) was where in the world and I going to find wedding dresses that someone is going to let me- here comes the crazy part: BORROW. Most stylist borrow and return the items that they merchandise/use. This is anything from the clothes, to the accessories, even the shoes!

Luckily for this project, I didn't need shoes. At the time of this shoot I was living in Fullerton, but working for a celeb. stylist in LA. I hadn't been working for the stylist up in LA long enough to borrow any clothes from her contacts, so I was on my own. And I needed to get resourceful, fast. First thing I did was venture over to downtown Fullerton. There are a couple of great Bridal stores down there as well as tons of vintages stores.

I walked up and down into every store introducing myself and getting to know store owners. It is not easy to feel out a store owner you just met and try to borrow there merchandise for a shoot that will most likely not be published-bc for the store owners, there is nothing in it immediately for them. And I can appreciate where they are coming from. However, that wasn't getting me anywhere either. Majority of the Bridal stores won't let you go near their gowns-they are thousand dollar gowns that could easily be stained or ruined. Part of me didn't want to responsibility of their gowns either, I knew I couldn't shell out the money it would take should anything go wrong.

Then I came across a vintage and costume store that was a true gem. They had a bunch of vintage wedding gowns to choose from, and even better, they were willing to let me borrow them for a few days for a very reasonable fee. Phew! I found wedding gowns for my first shoot on my own. I had already accomplished half the battle. To be honest, I am not sure what I would have done if I had not found this great little vintage store StrayCat & Costumes.

The shoot went off without a hitch. I even got to do some Art Directing and play with some of the props and posing of the models. The gowns were unscathed, and most importantly my photographers were blown away by the merchandise I found for them to photograph. We all lucked out to have two beautiful models to work with.

Hello, out there! Happy April fashionistas! First, I must acknowledge that I have been hibernating and I apologize. So much has happened between now and Oct. I can't believe that was my last post. I have been taking on a handful of different projects from styling to branding and concept design. I still did some styling, but more of my own projects, and I have recently been getting photos on these. I will try to catch up and keep current. I think the best way to do it is to do a few Mini-Posts of the different projects I have been working on instead of one massive post. Just wanted to revive the blog and transition it into what is happening now! Here is a preview of some of the projects I have been working on and what is coming up in future posts....

This is the Brand Imaging and Concept Design work for International Fragrance Co.

This photo shoot was done early Spring: Concept-Anthropologie. In addition to all the styling, i was given the opportunity to also be the subject model!

So in a nutshell, that is the most recent of my work and projects. I am currently styling a catalogue project for a co. up in LA. Photo shoot is this Weds. Can't give any more details on that until the project wraps and the new season's collection is shown to the public. Photos will be a month or so out. My next posts will go into more detail on the preview shoots from above.

Rumer Willis for Entertainment Weekly

Hey Stylistas! I finally got back the picture of the photoshoot I helped assist on back in August. The photo shoot was with Rumer Willis for Entertainment Weekly. She was doing press for upcoming movie, Sorority Row-now out in theaters. It is the September 11 issue of Entertainment Weekly with the Beatles on the cover. The shoot was on location at this ranch style mansion on the very very top of the Hollywood Hills. I got to prep and pull looks for the shoot. Going to the different showrooms in LA was fun. I got to go to People's Revolution, Jimmy Choo showroom, Chanel jewelry Showroom, and a few others that have been featured on The Hills and Rachel Zoe. Oh how different it is in real life and shown on Tv! It is always smaller in person, but just as cool to see!

Rumer was very cool and easy to work with. As most actresses, she is smaller and even more beautiful in person. Prep for this small shoot took about two days and then post/returns took about a day. We pulled so many looks for this shoot, twenty different dresses from underground labels like monroe to famous designers such as Dolce and Gabbana. We also had twenty pairs of jeans, thirty different shoes and so much chunky jewelry we ran out of places to lay it all out! Our rack of clothes was packed to the max. In the end she did three outfit changes, and went barefoot for each one. We were under the impression for wardrobe that this shoot was going to be a three page write up & spread, so we had to over prepare. However, it ran as a one full length shot and a page write up. Oh well! The end result is a great picture to add to the portfolio! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

American Vintage Photo shoot

Hey stylistas! I just got back some very early photos from a shoot I put together with the help of a photographer and model friend of mine. I collaborated with photographer Katelin Wallace and model Nicole Lockshaw. The theme for the shoot we came up with was American Vintage. We decided to do this theme because of the locations we choose: a vast open field as well as a modern/rundown building. The only hitch that could have gotten in our way was weather. It rained off and on the day before and the whole morning prior to the shoot. We had a back-up studio if the locations were to be rained out, but the studio would not have allowed us to translate the American Vintage theme as well. Lucky for us we were far enough south in Orange County that the clouds parted and we got some AMAZING photos all with natural lighting! We could not have been more lucky.

It was a long but very fun day. We started with hair and make-up at 12:30, came onto the location by about 3pm, and shot right up until we started losing light around 6:30pm. What a day! We were able to shoot at two different locations and get in five different outfit changes. These are some of the preview untouched photos. The final shots are still not ready, but I wanted to share these early photos because they turned out so well! These photos will serve the purpose of building the portfolios for the photographer, model, make-up artist, and myself, the stylist. Domestic Safari

Happy October!

I am so glad it is finally October. The official month of fall. For some reason I crave the fall season. I love the ambiance of the leaves turning, the brisk mornings, chilly nights, and pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks (although my favorite is still Carmel Apple Cider the rest of the year). Halloween is coming and so are the rest of the holidays. It's the last stretch until the new year, without all the craziness of the frenzied holidays back to back to back. It always seems to hold such a promise of opportunity-October is perfect.

Here is an editorial photo shoot that I worked on at FIDM. The project here was to sell a high end lifestyle brand, ours being homeproduct; more specifically within the photo a l

ine of dishware. The goal here was to sell not only a line of product but a lifestyle. I came up with the tag line of "Domestic Safari" as a play on words with the domestic side of a home blended with the craziness of the jungle safari. It is not the typical style that I gravitate towards, however I feel that our group came up

with a strong look and successfully sold this product visually speaking. The original was in color, but due to some tweaking in photoshop, I cannot get the color image to come up correctly on the blog. Which doesn't make sense because it will come up fine when I print it. Either way, here is the black and white version. Here is a photo of the color version on my computer. Terrible quality, but it is so much stronger in color than black in white. This was a great experience. I have never styled a shoot for a lifestyle brand. It is a part of the styling niche, so it is good to be well rounded. Styling jobs are very difficult to obtain which I am finding out, so the more well rounded I can be all the better! Renaissance Redoux

Hello Stylistas! The month of September has flown by for me and I thought I better get back to blogging before October is here. I have been waiting for some things to come in to blog, so I will have more pictures to share. First and foremost I am no longer a student! I completed my post grad. at FIDM and now I am floundering about in the real world like everyone else wondering what to do with all my free time... If I know myself at all I better figure out something quick. I get very restless when I don't have a lot going on. So that is an update about what has been going on since the last posting.

Now for the fun stuff: New styling pictures are in! The final project for my styling class had to produce a look based on a theme for a photoshoot. We worked within groups of three and had a model, and hair/make-up artist at our disposal. The shoot was at a studio in

dt LA. Here are the best looks from our group. The theme was Renaissance Redoux (rebirth).

There were a ton of pictures produced from the shoot, but these are the ones that I will use for my portfolio.

What is interesting about photoshoots is it is very much a "hurry up and wait" process. Stylists are usually the first to arrive on set, and sometimes the photographer. Then the model will arrive, and very often the hair and make-up artists. Once the clothes are picked out for the model, there is the process of hair and make-up. This can take hours-this is the wait part. From there it is hurry up! Clothes go on, and the photoshoot begins. The actual shooting of film only lasts between half hour to an hour at most. Once the photographer feels they got the shot, then it's a wrap. And if your lucky, you will get great pictures to put into a portfolio.

The Glorious Inglorious Bastards Event

Hey Stylistas! While I am anticipating the rush of awards season (mid Sept-early 2010) I thought I would catch up on some back events I worked right before the start of Stylist Avenue. Starting with the most recent: The Inglorious Bastards Premier and After Party!

Once again, I can thank FIDM for giving me the opportunity to work some high profile gigs. Being that FIDM is in LA, people in Hollywood know where to find students who are available to work last minute on events going on. I was just so lucky to work Quentin Tarantino;s

Inglorious Bastards movie that premiered Aug. 10 at the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood and Highland. I got to sit right where the Red Carpet began and my glamorou

s (not really) job was to check in the guests for the premier. Most of the talent's publicists pulled their tickets, but I did get to hand Angie's brother James Haven his ticket. And on a side note, I got to see Felicity's Scott Foley up close and personal, and he is such a doll! Very nice man.

Back to the talent... When Angelina and Brad rolled up to the Red Carpet it wa

s mayhem. People were lined on both sides of the street, and Hollywood Blvd. was pretty much shut down. There were fans lined up behind where us students were checking in people, trying to grab our credit badges. These badges were great, it kept people from bothering us, and I got to walk to the Red Carpet with it before the premier started. The theatre really is a sight. .

Brad and Angie look just as amazing in person as they do on TV. They were very gracious of their fans. Here is a shot of Angie signing autographs for die-hard fans. These people were there for hours before the couple showed up.

The leather dress that Angie rocked was cool, and very "Angie".

However, my favorite look of the night was Diane Krugers. I didn't see her at the premier, but she showed up with boyfriend Josh Jackson at the after party, which was held at the Mondrain Hotel off of Sunset Blvd. She was absolutely stunning. I couldn't help but stare at her when I first saw her, that face is practically angelic. I really think she is so under-rated.

Her dress was amazing, full of texture and reflected with the lights. To me, she stole the Red Carpet. I think the best with Ms. Kruger is yet to come. Stay Tuned!

Hey there! I worked an event thurs. night called Celebrity Catwalk. It was at the nightclub in the Hollywood and Highlands Center. The center is amazing by the way, if you ever get a chance to walk around there, do it! There is an entrance to the famous Chinese theatre there as well. The event was to raise money for animal awareness and rescue. Celebrities and models come to walk the runway and everyone has a good time. This year it was hosted by former Girl's Next Door Bridget Marquardt. Also there was the new three girls of the Girl's Next Door and Mr. Hugh Heffner himself. They were filming, so all of us had to sign waivers. The other models/celebs. there are up and coming so I had a hard time recognizing everyone there.

All of us working (mostly FIDM students) got to work behind the curtain as dressers. Everyone got assigned to a rolling rack of clothes with a model's name on it to help them dress for the scene the were walking. There were multiple scenes and clothing changes and LOTS of people running around. As far as I could tell, there was only one Stylist who coordinated all of it. Wow. Impressive. I would not want that solo responsibility without help. My friend and I were on props duty. We got to work backstage and see everything happening without being totally immersed in the mess of steaming and dressing. The props never ended up being used, so she and I got a free pass to observe backstage and then watch the show.

The event ended up being a hit and it was a good experience to put on the resume. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to bring cameras so I don't have any pictures to post. The link to their website is http://www.celebritycatwalk.com/ if anyone wants more info. Stay tuned!

Getting Started

Hello Everyone! I am new at blogging, so this should be interesting. A little bit about me. I am about to graduate from FIDM (los angeles) in September with a professional designation degree in Visual Communications. I received my B.A. from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Communications last year. Visual Communications: What is that? We visual students get that question a lot. It is anything that has to do with communicating an idea through a tangible medium to put it vaguely. Professions that we seek are: Visual Merchandising, Window Displays, Graphic Design, Styling, Interior Design, Set Design, or Event Planning/Design. It all depends on the interests of the individual. I am interested in a few different areas, but my main focus right now is STYLING. This blog is going to serve as the day to day activities and adventures of a stylist, as I am currently interning for a top celebrity stylist. Posts may vary depending on the work she has coming up. Stylist work can be hit and miss for demand depending on the season. The next season coming up after August will be AWARD SEASON! Very exciting, very demanding and very busy!
